Winter is coming: snow that stays

18 October 2026 · 6 minute read

Snow piles up on roofs and paths, supplies spoil more slowly, and anyone standing guard without a fur cloak freezes. A look at the first winter in the valley.

Since the last entry I have spent almost all my time on one question: what does the first winter in the valley feel like? Not as a filter over the image, but as a season that changes everything you built in summer.

Snow that stays

Snow now really falls and stays. It gathers on roofs, in corners and on paths nobody clears. Where the retinue walks often, it gets trodden down, so the paths you lay out stay visible even under a white blanket.

Supplies and cold

Nothing grows in winter. Whatever is not in the cellar is missing. That is why supplies now spoil more slowly the colder the storeroom is, and salted meat lasts almost the whole winter.

“A full cellar sleeps more soundly than any knight.” Grete was right, and now she has a game mechanic for it.

The retinue freezes

Anyone on watch without a fur cloak gets slower and grumpier. A brazier on the wall helps.

  • Cold lowers stamina and mood
  • Braziers and fireplaces warm a radius
  • Wolves come closer to the camp in winter

What comes next

Next up is whatever comes out of the forest in winter. Those in the first test wave will see it first.
